Krzysztof Okonski (Kazimierz Wielki University, Poland) analyzes 'Duvarlar-Mauern-Walls' in the book 'Turkish-German Relations in Literary History From the Fifteenth Through the Twenty-First Century' (November 2023)

CHAPTER 5

Wendeverlierer? Machos? Stasi-Zuträger? Zum Bild türkischer Einwanderer in ausgewählten Spiel- und Dokumentarfilmen über den Zusammenbruch der DDR

Victims of the transformation process? Machos? Stasi informants? The image of Turkish immigrants in selected films and documentaries about the collapse of the GDR

Krzysztof OKOŃSKI*

*Dr. habil., Kazimierz-Wielki-Universität, Fakultät für Kulturwissenschaften, Lehrstuhl für Kulturwissenschaftliche Komparatistik, Bydgoszcz, Poland

ABSTRACT (ENGLISH)
The history of migration from Turkey to Germany is presented in film, literature or in pop culture mainly focusing on the experiences of Turkish immigrants in West Germany. This perspective is self-evident and reflects historical reasons such as signing the labour recruitment agreement between the Federal Republic of Germany and the Republic of Turkey (1961). On the one hand, immigration in the last 60 years has shaped various social, economic, political and cultural aspects of the German reality; on the other hand, numerous films and novels can be used to reconstruct the life of German Turks. Nevertheless, we can observe the interest of German artists of Turkish origin in specifically German themes anchored in Germany’s past or present. If there are any overlaps with more recent German history, then they are usually described from the perspective of the immigrants (or their children) who were subject to the processes of social adaptation in West Germany. Apart from a few exceptions (Yadé Kara and Emine Sevgi Özdamar), the former GDR or the fall of the Berlin wall remain terra incognita for the German- Turkish culture. In this article, the image of Turkish immigrants in the context of the last days of the GDR is analyzed on the example of the following films: Deckname Blitz - Der Spion vom Teufelsberg by Harriet Kloss (documentary, Germany, 2003), So schnell es geht nach Istanbul by Andreas Dresen (film GDR, 1990) and Duvarlar-Mauern-Walls by Can Candan (documentary, USA/Türkiye 2000).

New in DOMID's collection: contemporary historical material by Can Candan

"We received from the filmmaker Can Candan the raw material of his historically significant documentary Duvarlar-Mauern-Walls. Hardly any other document can express the views and analyzes of Berlin migrants in such a condensed form at the time of the “Wende”, shortly after the "re-unification" of Eastern and Western Germany. What did the “fall of the wall” mean economically for the migrants who had worked in Berlin for many years? How do they analyze the flaring racism that manifests itself in murder attacks only a little later? We are grateful to Can Candan for the trust and will soon be able to prepare the material for research and review in our archive." Duvarlar-Mauern-Walls in Bremen - Bremen'de

Film & Gespräch mit dem Regisseur Can Candan (Istanbul)

27.11. - 20 Uhr - Lagerhaus (Saal), Schildstraße 12, Bremen

Regie: Can Candan
, USA/Türkei 2000, 83 min.
türk./engl./dt. mit dt. UT

Mauern 2.0. Migrantische und antirassistische Perspektiven auf den Mauerfall - gestern und heute (Migrant and anti-racist persepectives on the Fall of the Wall- yesterday and today/ Jana König, Elisabeth Steffen, Inga Turczyn / 29’

In 1990/91, Can Candan interviewed members of Berlin‘s Turkish community about their experiences with the German reunification. His film “Duvarlar/Mauern/Walls” testified to the fact that the newfound German unity explicitly excluded those perceived as “foreigners.” Inspired by Candan‘s film, the video project WALLS 2.0 set out to ask similar questions to some of the same protagonists twenty years later. The result is a much-needed dialogue about nationalism and identity in Germany, to be continued after the film in a moderated panel.

A project to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the guest-worker treaty between Turkey and Germany

Duvarlar, Mauern, Walls is a feature-length (83 min.) trilingual (in Turkish, German, and English) documentary film about the effects of the fall of the Berlin Wall on the immigrants from Turkey living in post-wall Berlin. It is also a snapshot of this immigrant community in 1991, as most of the filming for Duvarlar, Mauern, Walls, including many hours of interviews (both on audio and video), took place that year, during the 30th anniversary of the guest-worker treaty between Turkey and Germany. Since its completion in 2000, Duvarlar, Mauern, Walls has been shown at conferences, universities, seminars, film festivals, and community groups in Germany, Turkey, Switzerland, USA, Denmark, Norway, Egypt, and France. It has been a useful teaching tool and a discussion-starter about issues such as migration, guest-workers, cultural identity, belonging, history of Berlin, Berlin Wall, xenophobia, racism, etc.
Although Duvarlar, Mauern, Walls has been shown in numerous places, it is not distributed on DVD or online and remains largely inaccessible. It has not been broadcast on television, nor has it been distributed on DVD or via the Internet. Those interested in screening this film, especially academicians, teachers, researchers, social workers, and students can only access the film through its director. Moreover, hours of audio and video recordings, which did not make it into the edited 83 minutes of the documentary remains unknown and inaccessible.
This year I am trying to make this documentary available to the public through DVD or online distribution and a web-based audio-visual digital archive. As 2011 is the 50th anniversary of the guest-worker treaty and the beginning of migration from Turkey, this project will be a meaningful way to commemorate this historical event and create a valuable resource for the public.
I appreciate any type of support.

Can Candan
